Europe Bets With Ireland-Portugal and America Sees Them and Raises With California - This Will Get Ugly
By Chris Horner on 11.16.10 @ 7:53AM
So the collapse of the increasingly debt-ridden Portugese and Irish economies, and the subsequent bailouts, appear imminent.
Is this a bad time to remind readers that after Spain, touted over and over by President Obama as his model for a 'green economy' -- debt-financed temporary jobs mandating higher energy prices on top -- hurtled toward bankruptcy thanks in great part to that very scheme, the New York Times pivoted to say oh... no... Portugal and Ireland, that's where the success was...yeah, that's it?
And, O' Prop 23-rejecting California, can you hear them now? The sole difference and remaining unknown is that California might possibly be forced to deal with its own mess (with residual harm throughout the US, regardless), with the ant that is the American taxpayer tired of bailing out the silly green grasshopper.
You want gesture politics, spending billions and borrowing billions more, driving up energy costs and dooming your productivity with climatically meaningless green poses, that's fine. But you clean up the mess.
UPDATE: Just so you don't think we are out of the woods in Washington with the death of cap-and-trade, the push here for more Euro-style debt, capitalizing on relief over cap-n-trade's demise, is only accelerating. This is a good piece by London-based Dalibor Rohac reminding us of the coalition pushing it, the folly and the harm.

The Obama Centralization of Government and Enslavement of the Private Sector
This chart is a clear illustration that the federal government is on a path to dominating our economy and every decision you once made. As you can see, in the past two years employment in the federal government has grown by ten percent while the state and local governments have declined slightly to within one percent.
While the federal government has grown and the state and local governments have stayed relatively the same one could conclude that any stimulus from the taxpayers was only used to save government, local and state government positions and grow federal positions.
In a time of great economic trauma and while well over eight millions jobs from the private sector are lost, it can be said that the federal government is hell-bent on overshadowing local and state governments.
It appears that we are watching the quiet takeover of the states that make up our country. The autonomy they once enjoyed is endangered by new regulations, financial burdens such as Obama-Care and Cap-n-Trade’s environmental regulations. Also, what must be included is this centralized governments attempts to stop states from acting in their citizens best interest as in Arizona, with the influx of illegal immigrants and criminals.
Another danger that seems to be looming with this centralization of power is its attempt to purposely grow the government sector so as to have more control over the private sector. With the passing of more laws that include thousands of new regulations that the private sector must adhere to, they can dominate most decisions private sector companies make. This is a dangerous and insidious way of slowly taking over the more efficient and profitable private sector. By the federal government controlling and taxing them more and more the private sector will eventually become just another U.S. Post Office type entity that will have to beg annually for subsidies to survive.
This rapid encroachment into the sector that has made America what it is must be stopped and turned back. With the newly elected conservative congress and hopefully a new President in 2012 we’ll be able to swing the pendulum back to a more decentralized government before we end up with a fascist dictatorial government that rules how we are to live our lives.

Why California Will Begin Defaulting On Its Bonds Within Two Months
As a result of the recent CA elections and specifically props 25 and 26 CA is doomed. It is thought that California will begin defaulting on Bonds within a couple of months, because of the gridlock in Congress just voted in. There will be no bailouts. Governor Jerry Brown will fall back on the fact that this isn't his debt and will have no choice but to default on CA obligations.
Consensus believes this is a first half of 2011 event but its thought more people are watching Muni's and the price action in California than many realize....see below for some new information...will be interesting to see the follow through.
1) Credit Default Swaps closed at 278 bps last night, the live market is 290-300 and a trade through the offer breaks a 5-month range. For those with Bloomberg terminals, type STCALI CDS SR 5Y Index GP to see a chart.
2) CA announced today a deal for 10 billion Revenue Anticipation Notes (RAN's), 2 billion will mature in May at yields of 1-1.25% and 8 billion will mature in June at yields of 1.25-1.5%. Look at this tombstone as an example of what to expect... http://www.buycaliforniabonds.com/bcb/rans/offering.asp
3) Individuals historically are the largest buyers of RAN's as an alternative money market funds.
4) CA will also sell 3.75 billion of long-term obligations starting later this week.
5) PCK US, the CA Muni ETF is now down -14% and the NAV of the fund is down -4.5%. Its the wrong product but most cont to watch the move down...
6) "If you are full on California then don't add fuel to the fire," said Marilyn Cohen, chief executive officer of Envision Capital Management in Los Angeles, who manages $250 million in fixed-income assets. "If you hardly have any California exposure and you've got money sitting in money markets, then you better make sure it's worth your while because the news headlines are going to continue to go from bad to terminal."
7) The "punitive" yield California pays this year will be determined by the amount of individual investor interest the state can draw, said Regina Shafer, who oversees $5.3 billion in tax-exempt municipal bonds as assistant vice president of fixed- income investments for USAA Investment Management Co. in San Antonio, Texas. The notes will be attractive to retail buyers compared with other cash alternatives such as money market funds, which offer lower yields, she said. "Given the marketing effort, it'll probably be priced pretty easily," Shafer said. "Where states have a high tax rate, it's very attractive. I think retail will be very successful."

The Beginning of the Corruption in Obama-Care

Let us briefly review the rapidly growing rolls of companies, unions, and states bursting out of the Obamacare escape hatch.
In early September, I noted the push by Obamacare promoter and Democrat Rep. Ron Wyden for a special state waiver from the very federal mandate he advocated for everyone else.
A few weeks later, McDonald’s finagled its own Obamacare waiver after warning federal regulators that it could be forced to drop its affordable health insurance plan for nearly 30,000 restaurant workers unless it got a pass.
In early October, the Obama administration announced it had granted waivers not only to McDonald’s, but also to several other firms and labor unions.
Now comes word that Torquemada HHS Secretay Kathleen Sebelius has approved a whopping 111 waivers for businesses of all sizes, along with more unions and other providers of health insurance. The escapees include employers of many low-wage and part-time workers whose health insurance plans would otherwise be dropped, including Darden Restaurants — the parent company of the Olive Garden and Red Lobster and other chains, which employ some 34,000 people.

To be a great president, Obama should not seek reelection in 2012
By Douglas E. Schoen and Patrick H. Caddell
Sunday, November 14, 2010
President Obama must decide now how he wants to govern in the two years leading up to the 2012 presidential election.
In recent days, he has offered differing visions of how he might approach the country's problems. At one point, he spoke of the need for "mid-course corrections." At another, he expressed a desire to take ideas from both sides of the aisle. And before this month's midterm elections, he said he believed that the next two years would involve "hand-to-hand combat" with Republicans, whom he also referred to as "enemies."
It is clear that the president is still trying to reach a resolution in his own mind as to what he should do and how he should do it.
This is a critical moment for the country. From the faltering economy to the burdensome deficit to our foreign policy struggles, America is suffering a widespread sense of crisis and anxiety about the future. Under these circumstances, Obama has the opportunity to seize the high ground and the imagination of the nation once again, and to galvanize the public for the hard decisions that must be made. The only way he can do so, though, is by putting national interests ahead of personal or political ones.
To that end, we believe Obama should announce immediately that he will not be a candidate for reelection in 2012.
If the president goes down the reelection road, we are guaranteed two years of political gridlock at a time when we can ill afford it. But by explicitly saying he will be a one-term president, Obama can deliver on his central campaign promise of 2008, draining the poison from our culture of polarization and ending the resentment and division that have eroded our national identity and common purpose.
We do not come to this conclusion lightly. But it is clear, we believe, that the president has largely lost the consent of the governed. The midterm elections were effectively a referendum on the Obama presidency. And even if it was not an endorsement of a Republican vision for America, the drubbing the Democrats took was certainly a vote of no confidence in Obama and his party. The president has almost no credibility left with Republicans and little with independents.

Alan Greenspan Said Today Bond Crisis Dead Ahead
(Reuters) - The United States must move to rein in its massive budget deficits or it faces the risk of a bond market crisis, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said on Sunday.
"We've got to resolve this issue," Greenspan said of the ballooning U.S. debt levels.
He spoke about the issue as a panel, chaired by former White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles and former U.S. Senator Alan Simpson, is due to deliver a report on debt and deficits by December 1.
A draft report made public last week offered a series of politically tough tax and spending choices that would seek to reduce the debt by $4 trillion by 2020.
The report received a lukewarm reception from some politicians and outright condemnation by others, including House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who pronounced the ideas "simply unacceptable."
Greenspan, who spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press," said he believed "something equivalent to what Bowles and Simpson put out is going to be approved by Congress. But the only question is whether it is before or after a crisis in the bond market."
He said the risk is that the deficit, which hit $1.3 trillion this year, could spook the bond market. That would result in long-term interest rates moving up rapidly and could lead to a double-dip recession.

NATO Shield to Test Turkey's Allegiances - Turkey Cannot Be Trusted
ANKARA | Sun Nov 14, 2010 7:04am EST
(Reuters) - A U.S.-led plan to build a missile defense shield against Iran will test Turkey's conflicting allegiances, forcing it to find a way to satisfy NATO allies without alienating new partners to the East.
Frustrated at "waiting at the gates" of the European Union, and out of step with long time ally the United States on some key foreign policy issues -- notably regarding Iran -- Muslim Turkey has charted an increasingly independent course.
NATO member states will discuss at a summit in Lisbon on November 19-20 whether to build the shield, aimed at countering ballistic threats from the Middle East, in particular Iran.
Turkey, the only Muslim state in NATO, doesn't want any NATO agreement on the shield to identify as potential enemies either fellow Muslim states Iran and Syria, or Russia. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan also wants the shield to cover all Turkish territory and seeks guarantees command would stay within NATO.
Though Turkey is committed to NATO missions such as Afghanistan, it is no longer the compliant partner that it was during the Cold War and cannot be taken for granted by the West.
"Five years ago Ankara's choice would have been predictable," said Semih Idiz, a Turkish foreign policy analyst.

Don't Piss Off the Chinese Barry - The Glaring Omission
SPEAKING at a conference organised by The Economist in Beijing on November 3rd, Pang Zhongying, an expert on international relations at People’s University in that city, accused America of pursuing old-fashioned “balance-of-power politics”. Watching President Barack Obama in action this week, it is easy to see what he means.
Mr Obama’s four-country tour of Asia might have been designed to play on Chinese fears of American encirclement. Of course, it was not. Two of the four are on the itinerary as hosts of important international summits—the G20 in South Korea and APEC (Asia-Pacific Co-operation) in Japan.
However, add in the first two stops—a much-hyped trip to India and a twice-delayed visit to his childhood home in Jakarta—and he has ended up with a tour of important Asian democracies, from the largest to the richest (or now, in per-person terms, second-richest).
In India and Indonesia, this has given him the chance to stress shared values, and to challenge the notion that democracy and development need be at odds. Speaking to a joint session of both houses of the Indian parliament, he flattered his audience with the words “instead of being lured by the false notion that progress must come at the expense of freedom, you built the institutions upon which true democracy depends.” He went on: “India has succeeded, not in spite of democracy; India has succeeded because of democracy.”

Okay Folks It's All Over - Karzai Wants U.S. to Cut Back Afghan Military Operations
(Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai wants the U.S. military to scale back the visibility and intensity of its operations in Afghanistan and end night raids that he said incited people to join the Taliban insurgency, The Washington Post reported on Saturday.
"The time has come to reduce military operations," Karzai told the Post in an interview. "The time has come to reduce the presence of, you know, boots in Afghanistan ... to reduce the intrusiveness into the daily Afghan life."
The Post said his comments put him at odds with General David Petraeus, who has made "capture-and-kill" missions a central part of counterinsurgency strategy.
In the past three months, such night raids of Afghan homes by U.S. Special Operations forces had killed or captured 368 insurgency leaders, the Post said.

The Way This World Is Going and With the Idiot That's Leading Us Now, He Will Kill Us All If This "START Treaty" is Passed in the Lame Duck Session - Watch This Story - Your Life Will Depend On It
US President says getting the Senate to ratify the START treaty is his "top priority," despite drawing resistance from Republicans.
President Barack Obama, capping a far-flung Asian trip of mixed results, assured Russian President Dimitri Medvedev on Sunday that getting the Senate to ratify the new START treaty is a "top priority" of his administration.
"I reiterated my commitment to getting the START treaty done during the lame-duck session," Obama said, noting that Congress returns next week for its postelection session.
In talks with Medvedev on the sidelines of the summit of the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, Obama also reiterated his support for bringing Russia into the World Trade Organization, calling Russia "an excellent partner."
The START treaty, which has been pending in the Senate for months, has drawn resistance, principally from minority Republicans. A congressional aide briefed on White House plans for getting it ratified told The Associated Press this week that the White House was adding $4.1 billion in funding for the US nuclear arsenal in an effort to pick up the necessary votes.
Asked during a picture-taking session about whether his administration was putting more money on the table for the nuclear program, Obama declined to answer.

Deal Ends Democratic Leadership Fight - So the Black Man Takes the Lesser Job and The Dem's Had to Make a New Job for Him - I'd Call That Racist Wouldn't You?
(CNN) -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has struck a deal that ends the leadership fight for the number two slot in the new House minority, multiple senior Democratic sources tell CNN.
Under the compromise, current House majority leader Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer will become the Democratic whip, which will be the number two spot in the new Democratic minority.
South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn agreed to end his bid for that spot and instead hold a new, third-ranking leadership post that will be created for him. In a letter to Democratic colleagues on Saturday, Pelosi said she plans to designate him "Assistant Leader."
In a statement Saturday, Clyburn -- an African-American -- said it was important that the party's House leadership represented "the diverse views, backgrounds and experiences of our membership." The new structure, he said, "honors the diversity and fosters the unity" of House Democrats.

Britain's Top Soldier Says al-Qaeda Cannot Be Beaten - Shh, Don't Tell the Joint Chiefs
The new head of Britain's armed forces, Gen Sir David Richards, has warned that the West cannot defeat al-Qaeda and militant Islam.
By Sean Rayment, Defence Correspondent 9:30PM GMT 13 Nov 2010
Comments
He said defeating Islamist militancy was "unnecessary and would never be achieved".
However, he argued that it could be "contained" to allow Britons to lead secure lives.
Gen Richards, 58, said the threat posed by "al-Qaeda and its affiliates" meant Britain's national security would be at risk for at least 30 years.

A new report circulating in the Kremlin today prepared for Prime Minister Putin by Director Anatoly Perminov of the Russian Federal Space Agency states that an Arkon-1 military satellite monitoring the western coastal regions of North America detected an “EMP anomalous event” occurring on November 8th at 0600 Pacific Standard Time (-8 hours GMT) that bore the “direct signature” of a YJ-62 subsonic anti-ship missile fired from a Chinese People’s Liberation Navy Type 041 submarine (NATO code name Yuan-Class) [photo 2nd left] known to be patrolling approximately 200 kilometers off United States coast.
Nearly 11 hours after this EMP “event”, this report further says, Arkon-1 then detected a BGM-109 (Tomahawk) subsonic cruise missile launched from a US Navy Ohio-Class submarine operating off the coast of California [photo bottom left] on a “training mission” from its home port located at US Navy’s Kitsap Base in Washington State and was enroute to the largest American Naval Base on the US west coast in San Diego, California.

Breaking News: New Information on the L.A. Mystery Missile Confirmed - It Was Chinese
November 10, 2010 -- Pentagon and its embedded media covering up Chinese show of force off LA China flexed its military muscle Monday evening in the skies west of Los Angeles when a Chinese Navy Jin class ballistic missile nuclear submarine, deployed secretly from its underground home base on the south coast of Hainan island, launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from international waters off the southern California coast. WMR's intelligence sources in Asia, including Japan, say the belief by the military commands in Asia and the intelligence services is that the Chinese decided to demonstrate to the United States its capabilities on the eve of the G-20 Summit in Seoul and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Tokyo, where President Obama is scheduled to attend during his ten-day trip to Asia. The reported Chinese missile test off Los Angeles came as a double blow to Obama. The day after the missile firing, China's leading credit rating agency, Dagong Global Credit Rating, downgraded sovereign debt rating of the United States to A-plus from AA. The missile demonstration coupled with the downgrading of the United States financial grade represents a military and financial show of force by Beijing to Washington. The Pentagon spin machine, backed by the media reporters who regularly cover the Defense Department, as well as officials of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), and the U.S. Northern Command, is now spinning various conspiracy theories, including describing the missile plume videotaped by KCBS news helicopter cameraman Gil Leyvas at around 5:00 pm Pacific Standard Time, during the height of evening rush hour, as the condensation trail from a jet aircraft. Other Pentagon-inspired cover stories are that the missile was actually an amateur rocket or an optical illusion.
Experts agree that this was a ballistic missile being fired off of Los Angeles. Pentagon insists it was a jet aircraft or model rocket.
