I stumbled across this story purely by chance when a close friend told me his story today of how he found Mr. Dechert's (45) body floating in his backyard canal in the up-scale community of Lighthouse Point, Florida prior to a day of boating.
The party of four were quite shocked to observe a naked body floating ass up in the morning sun with Marine dog tags around his neck. There were no signs of skin breaks which would normally draw fish so it left the witnesses wondering how a naked body would end up in their canal.
This canal does lead to the Intracoastal Waterway and three miles to the North where Mr. Dechert resided after his retirement from the New Jersey State Police.
Now, finding bodies floating in South Florida canals has a long history due too Northeast mob figures adopting the playground as there own and quite frequently bringing their activities where they play.
Hopefully, Mr. Dechert died from natural causes but one has to wonder how someone dies naked and floats down the Intracoastal Waterway 3 miles from his residence in one day. Mine you floating 3 miles on this waterway is like walking down Main Street naked without being noticed. Oh, and we can't forget a messy lawsuit he brought against individuals who were officers of a defunct Township in New Jersey for harassment.
New Jersey is riddled with Soprano type figures that operate in high office and have for years. Do you think revenge is out of the question?
There is no question after reading Mr. Dechert's bio, that he wasn't the one on the wrong side of the law, after all everyone knows honorable men die with their Marine dog tags on.

Body found in Lighthouse Point ID'd as missing Deerfield Beach man
March 04, 2011|By Juan Ortega, Sun Sentinel
A body found floating in a canal last weekend was identified Friday as belonging to a Deerfield Beach man who reportedly was a Marine Corps veteran and longtime New Jersey state trooper.
Foul play is not suspected in the death of Daniel Michael Dechert, 45, who had been reported missing the day before his body was found, said Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office.
Dechert's death was ruled a drowning, Coleman-Wright said.
After leaving the Marines, Dechert served 20 years with New Jersey State Police before retiring about five years ago as a sergeant, according to an article posted online Friday by The Express-Times newspaper of Easton, Pa. While serving in the state police, he helped train troopers, the newspaper reported.
A boater found Dechert's body in a canal near the 2700 block of Northeast 51st Street at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, officials said. The site is a mile south from where Dechert owned a home in Deerfield Beach, property records show.
Sheriff's divers retrieved the body, and it was taken to the Broward Medical Examiner's Office, where an autopsy was performed Monday.
The Express-Times reported that Dechert had been in a legal dispute with members of the now defunct Oxford Township, N.J., Police Department.
Dechert moved to Deerfield Beach after suing two former Oxford Township officers, alleging he and a friend were the targets of unjustified traffic stops after Dechert criticized the department, the newspaper reported.
