NEWSCORE - U.S. swimmer Fran Crippen died Saturday during a race in Fujairah, part of the United Arab Emirates, Sporting Life reported. He was 26.
It is not known what caused Crippen’s death, the website added. Swimming's governing body FINA said he died on the last leg of the 10km (6.2 mile) Marathon Swimming World Cup race.
"While the causes of this death remain under investigation, FINA and the entire aquatic community address, in this moment of grief, their deepest and sincere condolences to his family, friends and to US Aquatic Sports and USA Swimming family," the organization said in a statement.
Crippen won the World Cup race in Cancun, Mexico, earlier in October. He was a bronze medalist in the 10km event at the FINA World Championships in Rome last year and in the 2010 World Open Water Championships in Roberval, Quebec.
